General Information
People living in the Punjab, and many Punjabi immigrants abroad, speak the Punjabi language. The language is originally spoken in the state of Punjab of India & in the east of Punjab of Pakistan. The Muslims in Pakistan write Punjabi in the Arabic script, and Sikhs & Hindus of Punjab write it in the Gurumukhi script. Gurumukhi script uses 10 vowels and 40 consonants. The word "Gurmukhi" literally means 'coming from the mouth of the Guru'. This script was introduced by Guru Angad Dev, a Guru of the Sikhs, in the 16th century. The script was for everyone regard- less of their caste, religion, or creed. The Sikh Gurus laid a great emphasis on learning as with every Sikh temple they built a school, which they called Taksal. It is obligatory for every Sikh child to learn Punjabi & to learn to read Guru Granth Sahib.
