Sikh Immigrants Sikhs started immigrating to the United States in 1897. Some Sikhs came straight from India, while others came from the far east, where they had immigrated decades ago. There were thousands of Sikhs living in California and the other western states by the end of the first decade of the 20th century.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Istanbul Did Guru Nanak Dev visit Istanbul in Turkey? Maybe yes, going by what Sikh scholar Dr Davinder Singh Chahal, who is recently living in Montreal (Canada), has to say. Until now, there was a Sikh shrine in Baghdad to suggest that the Guru visited as far as Iraq during the fourth udasi (missionary journey). Dr Davinder Singh Chahal had visited Istanbul in 1994 and saw a pillar 15 feet high and 6 feet wide in a park which had script in Arabic and Turkish language containing reference of Guru Nanak in its first line. He could not figure it out that time. This year when he visited Pakistan, he succeeded in decoding the pillar script with the help of two Pakistani scholars Iqbal Kaisar and Syad Afzal Hydar.

Women of Sikh history From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married. Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come. When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound. So why call her bad? From her, kings are born. From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all. O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman. That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful.

SHORT HISTORICAL ASPECTS AND THE SIKH RELIGION Hindu society was divided in four groups. They were given the name as castes viz: Brahmin, Kashatri, Vaish and Shudra. People in general and especially the high castes in particular became very rigid and started hating and mistreating the low castes, with the result that they were terribly divided and lost co-operation among each other.
